Introduction to Sonar Signal Processing

Course Title

Introduction to Sonar Signal Processing

Coordinator

Mr Graham Mountford

Dates

28 – 29 August , 2001

Course Outline

The course will provide an introductory, non-mathematical description of the processes involved in sonar signal processing. It will be based on the Sonar Equation, a simple statement of the primary parameters that affect sonar performance, and will examine those characteristics of the sonar environment (the ocean, the target, and to a lesser extent the properties of underwater sound) that influence the design of a signal processing system.

The course will examine typical sonar operating regimes, and will discuss the processing stages in a sonar processor:

1. signal conditioning;
2. beamforming;
3. spectrum analysis/correlation;
4. automatic detection; and
5. sonar displays and will indicate qualitatively the effect of each on the performance of the sonar in various environments and against different targets.

Finally, problem solving will be undertaken that will illustrate the way in which then processing system can have important impacts on sonar system design.

Teaching Method

There will be a series of 12 short lectures supplemented by short periods of problem solving, and a syndicate problem solving period at the end of the course.

Who would benefit

The course is a general introduction to sonar signal processing and also provides some material on the sonar environment. It is quantitative rather than theoretical, and may be of value to a range of people who are required to understand the basics of sonar in their work environment. Engineers, Scientists and Project Managers would find it useful as an introduction to the topic.

Course Presenter

The course is to be presented by Mr Graham Mountford. Mr Mountford has spent over 30 years in the sonar field. From 1968 to 1989 he worked at DSTO Salisbury, finishing as a Senior Principal Research Scientist in charge of the Signal Processing and Classification Group. He then with others started Australia Sonar Systems, which later became absorbed into Thomson Marconi Sonar (TMS), and managed and directed a variety of R&D and development projects in the sonar field. He is also a member of the CSSIP Advisory Board. He recently left TMS to start a consultancy business.
