Postgraduate Education Loan Scheme (PELS)

The Postgraduate Education Loan Scheme (PELS) is a loan facility for eligible students who are enrolled in fee-paying, postgraduate non-research courses. It is similar to the deferred payment arrangements available under the Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS).

PELS enables eligible students to obtain a loan from the Australian Government to pay all or part of their tuition fees. The Commonwealth pays the amount of the loan directly to the student's institution. Students repay their loan through the taxation system once their income reaches the minimum threshold for compulsory repayment.

NB Please note that FEE-HELP will replace the Postgraduate Education Loan Scheme (PELS). FEE-HELP begins on 1 January 2005 and will be available for both eligible commencing and continuing students from that time.

Go to the Higher education reforms page to find out about the changes to Australia's higher education system. If you are a continuing student, find out how the rules for HECS and PELS will change in 2005.
