Commercialisation

The Commercialisation Program is the third of CSSIP’s three core functions of research, education and commercialisation.

CSSIP was established in 1992 as part of the Australian Government’s Cooperative Research Centre (“CRC”) Program. This program currently funds sixty three CRC’s which work in six technology fields: Manufacturing, IT, Mining and Energy, Agriculture, the Environment and Medicine. CSSIP is part of the IT group and conducts research in the fields of Signal and Information Processing.

CSSIP undertakes original and commercial research which results in the development of new Intellectual Property (“IP”). The management and marketing of this IP and of CSSIP’s research expertise is the responsibility of the Commercialisation Program.

The research projects undertaken by CSSIP can be categorised as:

  • Consultancies: CSSIP provides expertise to solve an immediate problem over a short term

  • Applied Research: usually of one to two years duration focused on research into areas of direct interest to a client

  • Basic Research: usually 3 years duration or more to advance knowledge in an area where the client has an interest and which may in the long term result in commercial use.

The ownership and rights to use IP developed during research projects is negotiated on a project basis having regard to the client’s and CSSIP’s needs. IP developed and owned by CSSIP is available for licensing or sale.

To facilitate CSSIP’s interaction with the commercial world CSSIP has established Spire Innovations Pty Ltd a company wholly owned by the members of CSSIP. Spire holds an exclusive licence to commercialise CSSIP’s IP through licensing, joint ventures, start-up companies and the marketing of products. Spire also undertakes research projects using CSSIP’s staff and facilities.

This web site includes details of IP available for commercial use.
